McQueen March #4 Famous Collections

March 23, 2016

Hello my lovelies, I hope you are well. I know it has been a while since I have posted and I would like to explain why the blog has been absent and dead for the lack of posts, make sure you check this week's video where I will explain the reasons for this.
Let's get on with this post,
On to all things McQueen March.....
So as I said in last week's post, in this post I will talk about my favourite collections by McQueen and to me, these are my favourite three I have short listed.
The Overlook, Autumn/Winter 1999
Gatliff Road Warehouse, London 23 February 1999

First collection, I will be talking about is a collection that was in his early years as a designer. I really like the uniqueness he portrayed through this collection by gathering inspiration from the film 'The shining' ( The Overlook was the name of the hotel in the film). You can really see how the frozen scenery brings the depth of all these outfits as well showing the transition into the next century.

He wanted to create a darkness with this collection and I can feel it from the clothes he designed. You can see that each outfit has a sense of darkness waiting to unfold and there is something intriguing from the pieces I have chosen.

The coiled corset is what everyone was talking about which you can see in the third image. His inspiration for this piece was from the Ndebele Women of South Africa, I think it's amazing how he constructed such a fine piece and it's incredible to look at.
The Girl Who Lived In The Tree, Autumn/Winter 2008
Palais Omnisports De Paris-Bercy, Paris 29 February 2008
Fast forwarding about 9 years to this next collection called 'The Girl Who Lived In The Tree', this was centred around a fairytale narrative devised by McQueen about a girl who descends from a tree to marry a prince and who then became a queen.
I am a girl for detail and this collection caught my fancy by the incredible embroidery work on many of the garments. You can see the embroidery in a closer shot down below. He also gathered inspiration from India and I guess I can see this from the intricacy, delicateness of the way the garment flows, as well as the fabrics used in this collection. I guess this a different side to McQueen which is not often showcased in his collections, which is truly magical.
The Girl Who Lived In The Tree, Autumn/Winter 2008
Palais Omnisports De Paris-Bercy, Paris 29 February 2008
Autumn/Winter 2010
Hotel De Clermont - Tonnerre Paris 10 March 2010

The last collection to finish off with is, this one that is 6 years old. I guess it will always be a special collection to all McQueen lovers as it was the one before he died. I mean if you ever had to go out in style then this was the collection to do this.

I do not have many words, as this collection was mesmerising. I have much admiration in what he created and portrayed in this collection. I feel we should all take a moment to look at the pieces and say that he definitely made his statement in fashion, and as a designer!

McQueen March #3 Book Reviews

March 16, 2016

Hello my lovelies I hope you all are well. I know what you are thinking, 'FashtasticFlare didn't you say you were going to talk about McQueen's Famous collections in this post?' Yes I was suppose to be talking about his famous collections, but I need more time to prepare for that post. So I thought what is a quick and easy post that I can do for the time being and I thought a book review!

On to all things McQueen March......

So I always do a post where I talk about the resources I have used to understand the designers better and get some good content from the research I have conducted, to write about. In McQueen March there are two books which have aided me in learning about Mr McQueen and helped me to understand what type of designer he is.

Here is my take of "photography" to showcase the books I have used. ( I do make myself chuckle when I look at these pictures).

Vogue on: Alexander McQueen (Vogue on Designers) - £13.49

This book has been the most useful in understanding him at the very beginning of his career and the background of where he came from. I have used the Vogue on Designers throughout my designer of the month series and always find them great for setting the foundation for these posts. Easy read and great book visual and in writing.

Alexander McQueen - £29.25

This book is more thicker and bigger than the above book. It is really good when looking into his collections more. I have not read the whole book but from what I have seen, this is more focused on the collections he has created and shows great images of how they came together. So this is really good visual and if you are thinking of creating a mood board for this designer, then this book would be good for it!

That is all from this week, hopefully I will be posting the Famous Collections post next week.

Thank you for reading my post, I hope you enjoyed it. If you did then why not press that like button!

McQueen March #2 His Career

March 08, 2016

Hello my lovelies, I hope you all are well. I know it has been a while since I have posted on my blog the reason is that I was not too well over the weekend. I am a bit better now and I am here to post part 2 to McQueen March, also I will try to finish the fashion weeks posts this week. So that is something to look forward too.

On to all things McQueen March.....

As I stated in the last McQueen March post I will be looking into his career and how he developed into the fashion industry. A young 16 year old McQueen left school with only one qualification that was in art. Now that is so shocking, when thinking how far he has come. I think education is good to a certain degree but it is the drive, passion and desire that really helps you to succeed and better yourself in life.

His first job was at Anderson & Sheppard who were tailors by appointment to the British Royal Family. He really acknowledged the value of skills he learnt there. He portrayed how hard working and focused he was when working for this business. It's amazing how quickly he learnt and mastered many skills within a year, I guess that is what moulded him into the great designer he is today.

So let's fast forward a couple of years to his 20th birthday, this is where he started to work and create costumes for theatre productions in London. An important influence in McQueen's design was women in the 19th century, which it very interesting because that era held a great deal of techniques and styles which are incorporated in his work. One thing I found intriguing about Alexander McQueen is the fact that he recycled old clothes to create breathtaking pieces, this is amazing!

The next career jump that helped Alexander McQueen was working for the Italian designer Romeo Gigli where he learnt the art of self promotion. What he meant by this was as well as being a good designer you must know how to portray and market yourself as a person, and that is why he felt he succeeded in England.

In 1991 he returned to London in hope to work for Central Saint Martins College but instead they encouraged him to enrol on the College's Masters Degree Course in Fashion Design. In 1992 he graduated with a distinction, his degree collection was inspired by his famous serial killer and his victims called 'Jack the Ripper Stalks his Victims'. Taking inspiration from the Victorian times, there were pink frock coats, black silk jackets with blood red lining which you can tell that the historic times was heavily influenced in this collection.

That is all from this week, next week I will be exploring some of his famous collections.

McQueen March #1 Who is Alexander McQueen?

March 02, 2016

Hello my lovelies, I hope you all are well. I know, I know you are probably wondering why this post was not posted yesterday. I did post a tweet yesterday stated that I will be posting this post today and I will try to post this before midnight. If you don't follow me on twitter, then here is my twitter link - Follow FashtasticFlare.
The reason the post is being posted today is that it was my Nan's birthday yesterday. So I didn't have time to post and write this post. I am here now so let's get to it.

Now this month's designer *drum roll please* is..... you can already see. It is Mr Alexander McQueen. We finally have a British designer to talk about, YAY!

Welcome to McQueen March.....

Now if your a new fellow reader then I will give a brief explanation of what to expect from my designer of the month series. First of all these posts are expected to go live on the Tuesday's of the month, you are lucky that this month has 5 Tuesday's that means 5 posts. The style of posts in this series are about getting to know the designer better and I explore different collections and iconic career  moments as well. And don't forget the book reviews. So that is a little insight into what this series is all about and I change the designer every month, so we have looked at 4 designers so far.
Let's talk about Mr Alexander McQueen in a bit more detail. Mr Lee Alexander McQueen was born on 17th March 1969 and he was the youngest of six . I love how I didn't realise that his actual birthday was in March and he has the whole month dedicated to him. The south London boy was drawn to his heritage as he developed into a designer, and from a young age he always knew he would be 'something in fashion'.

At age 3 he drew his first ever design which was of a Cinderella dress that had a tiny waist with a huge gown, and he said from that moment he knew he always wanted to be a designer. It's interesting how at such a young age he had envisioned his future.

One thing I really love about Alexander McQueen is the fact that he was ahead of his time, and what I mean by this is that he knew what he wanted. For a 12 year old to follow designers' careers as well as reading fashion books is really inspirational. And I love the fact that he would advise his 3 older sisters on what to wear from first dates to job interviews.

So many of his interests like his love for water and passion for birds, reflected alot in his collections which I will later explore as we go on in this series. I always love knowing how these designs developed and the process of the journey to the final piece. It is really interesting when observing the designers' vision behind his work.

That is all from McQueen March but make sure to look out for the next post where I will be looking into his development into the fashion industry.
