Givenchy September #1 - Hubert De Givenchy

September 23, 2016

Hello my bookworms and welcome back to a designer of the month. I know what you are thinking? Sonam, it's been such along time? and didn't you say you were going to start this in August? and it's nearly the end of September? I will further explain what how august as a month has been for me in my next Life Lately which is will be up soon! Let's cherish the moment that the designer of the month is back and ready to fill your minds with knowledge.

On to all things Givenchy....

Now as you have gathered September's designer of the month is the man himself, Hubert De Givenchy or as majority of the nation know him as Givenchy!

He was and will always remain one of the greatest designer's of his time, he just knew the way women wanted to feel and took that way of thinking and put it in his designs and produced garments for every type of women.

Let's rewind back to the very beginning so we can gather an insight into how he came about his love for fashion. Hubert De Givenchy was born into an Aristocratic family in France, when he was young his father passed away. He was raised by his mother and grandmother. Being from a family that had an appreciation for luxury, the family owned a textile factory. This is where his development for refined taste and knowledge of fabric came from.

When he was aged 10 he knew that his future would lie in fashion, he also attended an event to see fabrics from all over the world. When Givenchy was 17 he set off to pursue a career in fashion design. His first step into the industry was getting his first apprenticeship from Jacques Fath. This is where he got the opportunity to collaborate with Elsa Schiaparelli, where they made a lot of separates.

In 1952, he had his own design couture house and this was massive for Givenchy as he was not that old. Givenchy became fashion's most famous children  with his 1st collection, as people were left astounded at what he could do with fabric. The collection consisted of skirts and tailored blouses that were very refined. The collection was made from cotton and gave a vibe of freshness and something new but it also possessed a touch of youthfulness!

As we travel further through his career you will notice that he as a designer was seen as youthful. I don't know if it was due to the fact that he acquired success at such a young age or he saw something in fabric that projected youth into the way he worked with it. His designs were for independent women; his clothing was made from a wide range of material which focused on cuts, superb fabrics, the clothes were not fussy. They stood for stream like elegance.

That is all from Givenchy September, expect a post very soon about the relationship of Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn.
