Westwood June #3 Book Review

June 22, 2016

Hello my lovelies how are you all? I just want to say a couple things before I get on to this post, firstly I will be posting a post and a vlog of my experience of #Bloggersball this weekend so look out for that. Also I will be posting my part 2 to my prom series, so there are some things to look forward to!

On to all things Westwood June....

So for those who have followed my designer of the month series you will know by the third post I review the materials I have used in this series. If you are new, this post is just telling you what sources I used to assist me in the research.

In Westwood June I used one book as a source for all my information and it is the book you can see above. I love Vogue on designers because they are concise and have the right amount of information to develop an understanding on the designer. They have a wide range of pictures along with great quotations about the designer and said by the designer.

I want to tell you my thoughts of Westwood June so far, I think Vivienne is an inspirational designer for what she has achieved as a British designer. She's a person who you cannot judge from what she  did in the past. Seeing her development from leather, latex, rubber to delicate fabrics is amazing, she proves that you can transition into any type of person and designer. She was not afraid to experiment and be bold with fashion, which I adore!

That is a little review of what I thought about the book. You can check out the book here - Vogue on Vivienne Westwood (Vogue on Designers)

That is all from this week, I will be back with Westwood June #4 next week!

Westwood June #2 Her First Collections

June 17, 2016

Hello my lovelies, I hope everyone is well. I know, I know my blog has been dormant for the past couples of days. You're probably like where is the designer of the month? and what about the prom series? The reason why I have been dormant is that I have been busy planning for tomorrow, and you're probably like tomorrow? what is tomorrow? Well I am going to an event and all will be revealed tomorrow, some of you might know already.  I really want to get my designer of the month post out today and prom will resume next week so yes!

On to all things Westwood June....

So last week I gave you an insight to her background and how she began to rise in her career. I talked about the collection that sparked interest around the fashion industry and started to see Vivienne as a designer no one thought she would be.

Her second collection 'Savage' released in the Spring and Summer of 1982 which had themes of the 'Pirate' collection but she added Native American styles and patterns. What I admire about Vivienne is that she brings that little bit extra and an element of surprise with every collection. I bet the media would sit there and be like what is she going to showcase next!

The next more famous collection was in Autumn/Winter 1983 called 'Buffalo' which further explored the cultural cross-referencing and ethnic adaptations. She gathered the information from images showcasing women wearing bowler hats and fuller skirts, who were dancing with babies tied to her backs. This collection was shown at Olympia in London and made Vivienne Westwood the first British designer to show there since the Sixties.

In the Spring/Summer 1983 she launched a collection that was called 'Punkature' she wanted to experiment with the most basic of shapes like rectangles, squares, tubes etc. She wanted the collection to be centred around the relationship of the push and pull of the fabric against the body, which pushed the hobo idea to the limit. I think this collection showed great innovatory and really outlines what you can do with just fabric as she frayed, tied and teared it!

That is all from this week, I will be back with Westwood June #3 next week!

Prom Inspiration Ideas #1 The Outfit

June 10, 2016

Are you looking for some inspiration for your prom outfit, then you have come to the right place...

So it's June and well everyone is worrying about exams there are some girls out there thinking about Prom and thinking what am I going to wear? This short series will give you guidance on all those questions that are currently running through your mind when thinking about Prom!

I am going to start off with "The Outfit" or what I like to call the statement piece that everyone will be looking at. So traditionally everyone wears a dress but the fashion trends right now give you the opportunity to explore other options and I will explain that later in the post.

So I have selected four dresses that show different styles and colours, to give you an insight that there is something for everyone.

ASOS  Miss Selfridge Chi Chi London  Lipsy

The four retailers I have picked are ASOS, Lipsy, Chi Chi London and Miss Selfridges. Now obviously you do not need to buy a dress from these four, but these companies will give you an idea of what you like along with, what sort of dresses you are looking for.

Colour

For some people colour can be a daunting experience and  especially when they do not know whether a particular colour will suit them and their skin complexion. This is why they feel that black is the only colour they love which is totally fine, as there are many styles of dresses that can still give you that timeless feel for example the Miss Selfridges dress above. The current colour scheme that it trending right now is pastels and this is perfect for anyone and any skin complexion. For me pastel colours are light, refreshing and still vibrant!

I mean look at the two dresses from ASOS and Chi Chi London they are beautiful and light and trust me, when I say this once you bring colour into your wardrobe you never go back to one colour again. I was 16 once and I use wear black so much, but I remember buying myself a red cardigan and being like wow this is quite nice! And ever since then I have never stop buying a range of colours, with time you will learn what colours look really good on you and what colours you think might not.

So pastels are great to bring into your wardrobe as they are subtle and don't make you feel like woahhh this is too much! If your a type of girl that wants to go all out then go for a bold coloured dress that's vibrant and you feel comfortable in. There is a great selection of dresses out there but always remember the dress should represent you not something your trying to be, as I can understand peer pressure can be a contributing factor when you are thinking about what to pick.

Length

When picking your dress the length can be a contributing factor on making the decision to buy it. There are three lengths: Mini, Midi and Maxi. When looking at the length think about comfort-ability, what looks good on you. For me personally I would go for Midi as you can look elegant and you can show off your legs and shoes! Shoes often get hidden in Maxi dresses, so I think Midi give you the best of both worlds.

All these skirts can be found on ASOS
Do you remember at the start of the post when I said that you have other options, what I meant by this was that you do not have to go for a dress. You could go for a top and a skirt!

In the image above I have selected a range of skirts which are currently trending in the fashion industry. I am in love with the pleated skirts right now and there are a range of colours you choose from. The other skirts I think would be great for Prom is the tulle skirts, I know when you think of tulle its ball gowns but what if you could change the ballgown and just pair a tulle skirt with a crop top. This will make the tulle skirt revolutionised in modern time and great for any event to be honest.

Think about what I have said in this post, I hope it has gave you a clearer insight into what you are looking for. Also definitely browse through multiple shops and try on dresses as this will give you an idea of whether you really want to buy it!

That is all from my first Prom Inspiration Ideas post. Stay tuned for the next post where I will talk about Makeup looks.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post, if you did then please leave a like.

Westwood June #1 Her Career Background

June 08, 2016

Hello my lovelies I hope you are well. Designer of the month is BACK and we staying in the UK with a British Designer! The last designer of the month was Alexander McQueen who is also British. This June month I will be exploring Vivienne Westwood's life and how she became one of the famous British designer's to ever live!

On to all things Westwood June....

Now where to start, well I have briefly heard of Vivienne Westwood but it was not for her clothes more for the other products she has produced. Everyone knows that my designer of the month series is to explore the live's of these designer's and find out how they became who they became.

So let's go to the very start of Vivienne's life, she was a country girl who was born in 1941 and came from a family where her mother was a cotton weaver and her father was from a family of shoemakers. At 17 her family moved to North-West London where she studied silversmithing and jewellery design at Harrow Art School. She thought she could not make an earning from an art career so she took a more conventional route to become a school teacher.

When Vivienne was 21 in 1962 she married an airline steward Derek Westwood, this is where she got her surname from. The marriage lasted three years and she had one son. The next man who came into her life was Malcolm McLaren, this is where Vivienne went through a phase which was quite rebellious.

They developed the first signs of punk style as well as changing their shop name from 'let it rock' to 'Sex' which promoted idea of sexual confrontation and introduced leather, bondage gear and rubber wear. Now let's take a moment to understand that Vivienne was not the type of designer that started with free flow garments instead she experimented with more difficult fabrics. Also this was not what a typical women would have been seen to do in that era.

After leaving that phase of her life behind in 1981 she created a collection called 'Pirate' which attracted a lot of attention in the media for all the right reasons. It was a collection that no one expected from her, as the style gave a new romantic movement which became historical and inspirational.

That is all from this week, I will be back with Westwood June #2 next week!
